These tombs were carved nearly two thousand years ago by the Nabataeans, the same civilization behind Petra. They built Hegra as a southern outpost of their trading empire, controlling caravan routes that carried incense, spices, and silk across Arabia.

Cut directly into sandstone cliffs and freestanding rock, the facades were monuments to wealth and lineage, meant to endure in a land defined by wind and sand. Today they stand almost exactly as they were left, the desert having preserved them better than any empire could.
